Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has shared his thoughts on the upcoming expanded Club World Cup, set to feature 32 teams in 2025. While acknowledging the excitement surrounding this new tournament, he also recognized the concerns surrounding player workload and the increasingly packed football calendar.
“Once every four years there’s this new, extremely exciting competition. Everyone wants to go to the Club World Cup,” he said, referencing the growing concerns voiced by players and coaches alike. The 2025 edition, slated for the United States from June 15th to July 13th, will feature 12 European clubs, a significant departure from the traditional format involving only the six continental champions and the host nation.
This expansion has prompted concerns, particularly from players like Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who warned earlier this month about the possibility of players going on strike due to the sheer number of matches they are expected to play.
Luis Enrique echoed these concerns, stating, “Of course those involved must speak. I understand and I agree that the calendar is very busy, particularly that of Manchester City. Ours is less so because we have two fewer teams in our league and therefore four fewer matches.” He further emphasized the need for a less hectic calendar, stating that “A less hectic calendar would favour everyone.”
The upcoming Club World Cup is shaping up to be a significant event, but the concerns surrounding player well-being and the need for a more balanced calendar remain at the forefront of discussions within the football community.
