Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy Amusement Park Returns to New York City

Get ready for a whimsical journey through the world of art and entertainment! Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy, the world’s first art-themed amusement park, is returning for a limited engagement at The Shed in New York City, opening its doors on November 20th.

This unique experience, which first captivated audiences in Los Angeles, brings together carnival rides and attractions designed by some of the 20th century’s most renowned artists. Imagine taking a spin on a Ferris wheel by Jean-Michel Basquiat, riding a carousel created by Keith Haring, or soaring through the air on a wave swinger designed by Kenny Scharf.

Beyond the rides, Luna Luna features immersive pavilions dedicated to iconic artists like David Hockney, Salvador Dalí, and Roy Lichtenstein, along with captivating works by Arik Brauer, Sonia Delaunay, Monika Gil’sing, and more.

The park’s origins trace back to 1987, when Viennese artist André Heller created Luna Luna in Hamburg, Germany, drawing in over 300,000 visitors. After a planned global tour, the park’s treasures were stored in Texas for over three decades. Eventually, entrepreneur Michael Goldberg rediscovered them, and world-famous musician Drake acquired the collection.

After two years of meticulous restoration, Luna Luna is ready for its highly anticipated second world tour. “You can be art-obsessed or have never heard of Basquiat, and Luna Luna will put a smile on your face. It’s one of those rare projects that has the power to bring together all walks of life—it’s a nostalgic format done in a totally new way,” says Michael Goldberg, Chief Experience Officer for Luna Luna and founder of Something Special Studios.

The New York show will feature the original artist-created rides and attractions, along with new commissions, components, theatrics, and performances. Visitors can also explore archival materials, gaining insight into Luna Luna’s history, the meticulous restoration process, and the park’s significance.

But the magic of Luna Luna doesn’t end with the rides and attractions. Roving performers, curated music, and a magical atmosphere transport visitors to the park’s whimsical world. Iconic installations like David Hockney’s Enchanted Tree, Roy Lichtenstein’s Glass Labyrinth, and Salvador Dalí’s Dalídom come to life.

The Luna Luna Store at The Shed will offer a curated selection of archival items and new designs inspired by the original fair, including exclusive merchandise from artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein.
