Luxury Marbella Villa Rental Scam Leaves British Tourists Stranded

In a popular holiday destination like Marbella, a group of British tourists faced an unexpected nightmare when their dream vacation turned into a rental scam. The tourists had booked a stunning villa in the sought-after Costa del Sol area, boasting a swimming pool and seven suites. The property was reportedly available for rental up to February next year, with reservation charges of around £859 per guest.

However, the plot thickened when the rightful owner of the property expressed complete ignorance about the rental arrangement. He claimed that he had left the property vacant with the maintenance man, believing it to be empty.

Allegations emerged that the maintenance man had sublet the property long-term without the owner’s knowledge or consent. The maintenance man reportedly created contracts and other paperwork, presenting himself as the authorized representative of the property.

According to a report on Antena 3, a lawyer representing the tenant, identified only as Odon, stated that his client found the property advertised on Idealista, a renowned online platform for property rentals and sales. The lawyer explained that his client had contacted a real estate agency, which put him in touch with the individual posing as the property representative.

The tenant was provided with keys and documentation, leading him to believe that the rental was legitimate. The tenant signed a lease contract, expecting the villa to be his temporary residence.

However, the plot took a sinister turn when it was revealed that the maintenance man had allegedly proposed using the property for vacation rentals during periods when the tenant was absent. This scheme was intended to generate additional income to cover rent and potentially yield profits.

An investigation has been initiated to uncover the truth behind this rental scam. The lawyer representing the property owner, Alberto, estimates that up to 60 individuals may have fallen victim to this fraudulent scheme. Both the tourists and the rightful owner are believed to have become unwitting victims of a rental scam.
