Macau, long known as Asia’s casino capital, is upping its hotel game in a big way. In the past year, four new luxury hotels have opened their doors, offering a range of experiences from British-themed suites to art-filled rooms and plant-filled lobbies.
The Karl Lagerfeld, a five-star hotel located at Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, is the brainchild of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. The hotel features chinoiserie motifs throughout, and The Book Lounge houses 4,000 reads selected by the late designer’s bookshop Librairie 7L.
Raffles at Galaxy Macau is part of the legendary Raffles brand, which includes historic properties such as the Raffles Singapore and luxurious European hotels such as Le Royal Monceau in Paris and the recently opened Raffles London at The Owo. The Macau outpost features around 450 lavishly decorated suites and boasts a glitzy interior where crystal chandeliers and Italian marble sculptures combine with Eastern elements such as peacock motifs.
Andaz Macau is the brand’s biggest hotel to date, with 700 rooms and suites. It particularly stands out with its selection of commissioned artworks that speak to Macau’s East-meets-West identity, including Macau Steps, a multisensory staircase where guests can watch over 100 videos about the city’s past and present.
The Londoner Macao is a five-star London-themed hotel from Sands Resorts Macao. The all-suite hotel is a fun and slightly over-the-top celebration of all things British, from its recreation of the Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament to the Union flag-painted London cabs greeting guests as they arrive in Macau. Footballer David Beckham, Sands’ global ambassador, is behind the design of the David Beckham Suites, located on the top two floors of the property.
These four new hotels are just a few examples of the many new developments that are making Macau a more attractive destination for both business and leisure travelers. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and now its world-class hotels, Macau is a city that is well worth exploring.
