Madurai Railway Division Achieves Highest Train Punctuality in India

The Madurai Railway Division has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the highest punctuality rate for trains in India. This impressive achievement was announced by Divisional Railway Manager Sharad Srivastava during Independence Day celebrations at the division office.

The division recorded an outstanding 99.37% punctuality rate for mail and express trains, while unreserved passenger and train-on-demand (ToD) services achieved an equally impressive 99.42%. This record-breaking punctuality was achieved over the April-July 2024 period, highlighting the division’s commitment to providing reliable and efficient train services.

Beyond punctuality, the Madurai Railway Division has also witnessed a significant increase in freight speed. Freight trains within the division achieved an average speed of 38.19 kmph, an impressive 8.77% increase from previous years. This remarkable improvement further underscores the division’s dedication to streamlining operations and maximizing efficiency.

In addition to these accomplishments, the division has introduced new services, including the Tuticorin-Mettupalayam-Tuticorin Biweekly Express. The Palaruvi Express, running between Palakkad and Tirunelveli, has also seen its capacity expanded from 14 to 18 coaches, and its route has been extended to Tuticorin from Tirunelveli, effective August 15, 2024.

The Madurai Railway Division generated a revenue of Rs 418.45 crore between April and July 2024. This impressive revenue stream is comprised of Rs 270.94 crore from passenger services, Rs 115.60 crore from freight, Rs 19.76 crore from other services, and Rs 7.75 crore from sundries. During this period, the division efficiently transported 1.49 crore passengers and handled 0.938 million tonnes of goods.

The division has undertaken significant infrastructure enhancements to improve passenger experience and accessibility. These enhancements include the construction of high-level platforms at 13 stations, the creation of 39 new platform shelter bays, and the expansion of parking facilities. To further improve passenger comfort, nine prefabricated toilets and urinals have been installed across the division.

The division has also made significant progress in installing lifts at various stations. Of the 42 lifts planned for 17 stations, 26 have been completed, with seven already operational and six more set to open shortly. The remaining lifts are at an advanced stage of construction, with the goal of completing all 42 by the end of the year.

These notable achievements reflect the Madurai Railway Division’s commitment to providing efficient, comfortable, and accessible railway services to passengers while also prioritizing the smooth and timely movement of freight. The division’s dedication to progress and continuous improvement is evident in its impressive accomplishments and ongoing endeavors.
