A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck northern Chile on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The tremor’s epicenter was located 164 miles (265 kilometers) east of the coastal city of Antofagasta, at a depth of 78.5 miles (126 kilometers). Despite the significant magnitude, no tsunami warning was immediately issued. The earthquake occurred deep within the earth, which may have mitigated the potential for surface damage and coastal impacts.
