These modern business tycoons are renowned for their wealth and fortune. However, there was another Indian who set the standard for lavishness and creativity even before their rise to prominence.
Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, the first Indian to own a private jet, was a true embodiment of luxury and a pioneer in his time. He purchased his aircraft in 1910 from the United Kingdom, cementing his place in history as a trailblazer.
Born on October 12, 1891, at the Moti Bagh Palace in Patiala, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh ruled over the princely kingdom of Patiala in Punjab from 1900 to 1938. He ascended to the throne at the young age of nine, following the death of his father, Maharaja Rajinder Singh I, on November 9, 1900. After receiving his education at Aitchison College, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh embraced a life of opulence and made his mark in various spheres.
Beyond his luxurious lifestyle, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was a passionate patron of cricket and played a significant role in developing the sport in India. He captained his own team, Patiala XI, which was one of the top cricket teams during his time. In 1911, he led the Indian cricket team on their inaugural tour to England, demonstrating his commitment to the sport’s growth. His own cricketing career saw him participate in 27 first-class matches between 1915 and 1937, and he was even a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club for the 1926–1927 season. Although chosen to lead India during their inaugural Test tour of England in 1932, he was unfortunately unable to travel due to a medical condition.
Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s influence extended beyond cricket. He established the State Bank of Patiala in 1917, demonstrating his foresight and commitment to economic development. He was also known for his impressive collection of medals and for his luxurious transportation. Legend has it that he owned a cavalcade of twenty Rolls Royce vehicles, further solidifying his reputation for opulence.
