A two-alarm fire in Waterbury on Monday evening has left more than two dozen residents displaced. According to Sean Maynard, Battalion Chief of the Waterbury Fire Department, the fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. at a three-story home on William Street.
Most residents were able to make it out of the home without harm, though Maynard said one person suffered a minor injury and was taken to an area hospital. There were a number of pets in the home, including birds, snakes, and other “exotic animals.”
“Some we were able to get out, some perished,” said Maynard. “I don’t have an exact number.”
The house sustained extensive fire damage on the third floor and water damage to the first two floors. The blaze left 20 adults and six children without a home, according to Maynard. He said the building owner helped relocate them.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
