Majorca Tourists Face Hefty Fines as Authorities Crack Down on ‘Uncivil Attitudes’

British tourists visiting the stunning Balearic island of Majorca have been warned to be on their best behavior or face hefty fines of up to £2,563 (€3,000). A new Civic Ordinance, expected to come into force in the coming weeks, aims to correct ‘uncivil attitudes’ sometimes shown by holidaymakers heading to the island, according to Jaime Martínez, the mayor of Palma.

The new rules will crack down on drunken behavior, gambling, vandalism, and anti-social behavior, and will allow zero tolerance for ‘rampant’ irresponsible behavior displayed by some visitors, said Martínez.

‘The same things we demand of our citizens, we demand of our visitors,’ he added.

Speaking at the ITB Berlin tourism fair in March, Martínez warned that the town hall would be ‘inflexible’ in enforcing the new regulations. ‘The town hall is going to be inflexible,’ he said. ‘There will be no turning back.’

Playa de Palma is one of Majorca’s top nightlife destinations, particularly popular with German and British tourists. In 2022, nearly four million people flew in from Germany, while 2.1 million Britons chose Majorca as their holiday destination.

The mayor added that he expected more police officers to be on the streets during the summer, as ‘no one deserves to have to put up with (bad) behavior every year.’

The new measures have been met with mixed reactions from tourists. Some have welcomed the move, saying it will help to improve the island’s image and protect its residents from disruptive behavior. Others have expressed concern that the fines are too harsh and could unfairly target tourists.

It remains to be seen how the new regulations will be enforced and whether they will be effective in curbing uncivil behavior among tourists visiting Majorca.
