The Malayalam film industry is facing another wave of allegations as a young male actor has accused director Ranjith of sexual assault, adding to the ongoing controversy surrounding sexual harassment in the industry. The actor filed a complaint with Kerala Police, claiming that Ranjith lured him to a Bangalore hotel under the pretense of an audition, only to assault him.
According to the actor’s statement, Ranjith allegedly asked him to strip naked and then proceeded to assault him. The actor initially believed he was attending an audition but realized the situation after the assault. The victim further claimed that Ranjith offered him money the day after the incident.
This latest accusation comes in the wake of the release of the Justice Hema Committee report, which was formed to investigate the 2017 actress assault case. The report revealed a disturbing pattern of sexual harassment and exploitation within the Malayalam film industry, sparking widespread outrage and criticism of the government’s inaction.
The Hema Committee, led by Kerala High Court Judge Justice K. Hema, veteran actress Sarada, and retired IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari, conducted a thorough investigation into the alleged atrocities against women in the industry. Their report, released recently, has led to numerous women actors coming forward with their own stories of sexual harassment, further exposing the systemic issues within the industry.
Many actors have accused prominent figures in the industry, including director Ranjith and actors Siddique and Mukesh, of misconduct. This recent accusation against Ranjith, following the Hema Committee report, has reignited calls for accountability and reform within the Malayalam film industry.
Former Union Minister and BJP leader V. Muraleedharan has criticized the Kerala government for its lack of swift action regarding the Hema Committee report, accusing them of attempting to protect influential figures in the industry. As the controversy unfolds, the focus remains on the need for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the allegations and for the implementation of measures to ensure the safety and well-being of those working in the Malayalam film industry.
