A Malaysian court has sentenced a woman to 10 years in prison for splashing hot water on a man with Down syndrome in a lift. The incident occurred in an apartment building in Bayan Lepas on Tuesday, and the horrifying video of the attack went viral on the internet. The victim, who lives on the 16th floor of the building, was returning to his apartment when he was attacked.
The woman, identified as Oo Saw Kee, pleaded guilty to the charge of throwing boiling water at the victim. Judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin condemned her actions as serious, cruel, and inhumane, especially as the victim was disabled. She was also ordered to pay a fine of 6,000 ringgit (over Rs 1 lakh).
According to the police, the woman was arrested at 9.20 pm in the same apartment building where she lives. She is being investigated for assault. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, as there had been no prior altercations or known interactions between the victim and the suspect.
The victim was taken to Penang Hospital for treatment. A medical examination revealed that he sustained burns on the front and back of his right side, consistent with exposure to hot water. This contradicts initial reports claiming an acid attack.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many people condemning the woman’s actions. Some have called for her to receive a harsher sentence, while others have expressed concern about the safety of people with disabilities.
