Maldives Highlights China as Top Tourism Market at ITB China 2024

At the ITB China trade fair, Maldives Minister of Tourism, Mr. Ibrahim Faisal, emphasized the robust relationship between the Maldives and China, affirming China’s status as the top market for the Maldivian tourism industry. This statement was made during the Maldives Media Meet, organized by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) on the sidelines of ITB China 2024 in Shanghai.

Minister Faisal highlighted that China is the Maldives’ leading tourism market and underscored the need to enhance connectivity by increasing the number of direct flights from various regions in China. “The recent launch of direct flights from Fujian is a significant step forward, and we are committed to establishing more such connections to facilitate travel for Chinese tourists,” said Minister Faisal.

The Minister also revealed plans to broaden the Maldives’ tourism sector beyond luxury resorts. This includes enhancing the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector by upgrading facilities and venues, establishing the Maldives as a prime location for international events. Moreover, there is an emphasis on community-based tourism, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in local culture and traditions. This approach includes stays in guesthouses, participation in traditional activities, and enjoying home-cooked meals, providing an authentic Maldivian hospitality experience.

“The Maldives offers something for every traveller,” stated Minister Faisal. “Whether you seek luxury, a unique venue for your next conference, or an immersive cultural experience, our islands are ready to welcome you.” He concluded by highlighting the importance of the Maldives-China partnership in boosting tourism, fostering cultural exchange, and maintaining regional stability.
