Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu embarked on a four-day state visit to India on Sunday, signaling a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. During his visit, President Muizzu, who some perceive as a ‘pro-China’ leader, made a significant statement, emphasizing that the Maldives would not engage in any activities that could undermine India’s security. He reiterated that New Delhi is a “valued partner and friend,” and highlighted the “priority” of continued cooperation in fields like defense.
This visit marks a turning point in the relationship, which had experienced tension over the past year. President Muizzu, who won the Maldivian elections last November on a platform of an ‘India Out’ campaign, has made a deliberate effort to mend fences. He stressed, “Respect for our neighbours and friends is embedded in our DNA,” underscoring his commitment to healing the diplomatic rift that had negatively impacted the Maldivian economy.
President Muizzu further appealed to Indian tourists to return to the Maldives, which relies heavily on tourism for its economic vitality. He assured, “Indians make a positive contribution… Indian tourists are welcome.” He acknowledged the ongoing economic crisis in the Maldives and expressed gratitude for India’s continued support, stating, “India is fully cognisant of our fiscal situation, and as one of our biggest development partners, will always be ready to ease our burden, find better alternatives and solutions to the challenges we face.”
The Maldivian President’s visit to India follows an official invitation from President Droupadi Murmu. This is his second visit to India this year, having previously attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June.
President Muizzu’s delegation includes nearly a dozen ministers and senior officials, who were received at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.
On October 6, President Muizzu met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi, engaging in discussions to foster and maintain strong bilateral ties. The meeting addressed the progress of ongoing initiatives supported by the Indian government and explored potential for future collaborations.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), S Jaishankar expressed optimism about the future of the relationship, stating, “Confident that his talks with PM @narendramodi tomorrow will give a new impetus to our friendly ties.”
During his visit, President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also interacted with the Maldivian community in New Delhi. They inquired about their well-being, listened to their concerns, and reaffirmed their commitment to addressing those issues. The visit signifies a new era in the relationship between India and the Maldives, one characterized by shared interests, mutual respect, and cooperation in various fields.
