The Maldives, a global gem for travelers seeking paradise, continues its upward trajectory in tourism. The island nation welcomed 27,322 tourists during the first week of September 2024, demonstrating a robust start to the final quarter of the year. This positive trend puts the Maldives on track to reach its ambitious target of 2 million tourist arrivals by year-end.
While a slight 2.6% dip in arrivals compared to the same period in 2023 was observed, the figures remain impressive, surpassing the 25,856 arrivals recorded in the first week of September 2022. This consistent growth underscores the resilience of the Maldivian tourism sector, which has rebounded strongly post-pandemic, fueled by its captivating resorts, luxurious experiences, and strategic marketing initiatives.
Between September 1st and 7th, the Maldives averaged 3,903 daily tourist arrivals, with visitors staying for an average of eight days. This steady influx of travelers signifies a promising finish to the tourism season, with the final quarter of 2024 anticipated to see a significant boost in arrivals.
Looking at the larger picture, the Maldives has recorded 1,386,530 tourist arrivals between January 1st and September 7th, 2024, reflecting a 10.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This marks a substantial leap from the 1,104,499 arrivals recorded in 2022. On average, the Maldives welcomes 5,524 tourists per day in 2024, with visitors enjoying an average stay of eight days. The peak daily tourist arrival for the year was recorded on February 10th, 2024, with over 10,000 visitors landing at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The Maldives’ tourism industry has consistently performed well throughout 2024, with a notable surge in arrivals from various source markets. China currently leads the list of top tourist source markets for the Maldives, contributing 14.6% of the market share. As of September 7th, 2024, 202,613 Chinese tourists had visited the Maldives. This influx of Chinese tourists follows the reopening of international travel in China, highlighting the importance of the Chinese market to the Maldives’ tourism industry.
While Italy initially held the top spot for source markets at the beginning of the year, Russia quickly took over, contributing 10.8% of the total market with 149,920 arrivals as of September 7th. Russia also topped the list of source markets by the end of 2023, and it continues to perform strongly in 2024. The United Kingdom currently ranks third, accounting for 8.6% of the market with 119,189 arrivals. Although the UK held second place for a period, it was overtaken by Russia.
Other key source markets for the Maldives in 2024 include: Germany, France, India, and the United States. Notably, Poland, which was among the top 10 source markets earlier in 2024, has recently been replaced by Spain in the rankings.
At the start of the year, Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal expressed optimism about the Maldives’ tourism outlook, emphasizing the importance of diversifying source markets to ensure consistent growth throughout the year. In June 2024, the Maldives achieved a significant milestone by welcoming its one-millionth tourist of the year on June 27th. Minister Faisal remains committed to exploring new markets and expanding the Maldives’ appeal to diverse traveler segments, as the nation continues its pursuit of the 2 million arrivals target by the end of 2024.
