The Maldives Tourism Minister, Ibrahim Faisal, is scheduled to arrive in India today for a six-day trip aimed at promoting tourism roadshows under the “Welcome India” initiative. This campaign seeks to bolster the Maldives’ position as a top holiday destination for Indian travelers. A series of events are planned in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru from July 30th to August 3rd. However, recent data paints a concerning picture for the Maldives tourism industry, as Indian tourist numbers have taken a significant dip.
During the first four months of 2024, Indian tourist arrivals to the Maldives decreased by 42% compared to the same period in 2023. This marks a stark contrast to the previous year when Indian tourists were the largest group of foreign visitors to the Maldives, surpassing even China.
The decline in Indian tourist numbers can be attributed to several factors, including escalating tensions between India and the Maldives. These tensions began after the Maldives’ new President, Mohamed Muizzu, took office, continuing the ‘anti-India’ rhetoric from his campaign, which focused on the ‘India Out’ movement and the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives. He also broke with tradition by prioritizing a visit to China over a visit to India.
In December 2023, the Maldives further aggravated the situation by announcing its decision not to renew its Hydrographic Survey agreement with India. These actions sparked outrage among Indians, culminating in a public boycott of the Maldives as a tourist destination.
The situation worsened when three Maldivian deputy ministers made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his visit to Lakshadweep. These comments, which led to the suspension of the ministers, fueled anti-Maldives sentiment in India.
Despite the decline in Indian tourist numbers, the Maldives Tourism Minister remains optimistic about reviving Indian tourism to the island nation. Earlier in May, he urged Indians to contribute to the country’s economy, which heavily relies on tourism.
Minister Faisal’s visit to India comes amidst heightened tensions and a declining Indian tourist presence. His mission is to rekindle interest in the Maldives as a destination for Indian travelers, showcasing the country’s beauty and hospitality. The success of this initiative will depend on his ability to address the concerns raised by Indian citizens and restore positive relations between the two nations.
