Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that the outcome of the general elections signifies the country’s desire for autonomy in choosing its future and opposing foreign influence.
Muizzu’s pro-China People’s National Congress (PNC) won a super majority in Sunday’s elections. He emphasized that the results demonstrate the Maldivian people’s commitment to upholding their Islamic identity and guiding principles.
Muizzu’s remarks were made a day after the PNC secured a super majority in the People’s Majlis, parliamentary elections. The party won 68 out of 93 seats, while its coalition partners secured three additional seats.
The President maintained that the election results convey a message to the international community about Maldivians’ aspirations for autonomy and sovereignty. He has previously accused India of interfering in Maldivian affairs and campaigned on an “India Out” platform during last year’s presidential elections.
Muizzu called for political leaders to set aside differences and focus on the country’s development. He urged parties to collaborate in shaping the future of the Maldives.
The super majority in the Parliament will provide Muizzu with significant legislative backing to establish the country’s foreign policy, which is strategically located near India’s southern coast.
