## Malta Embraces Sustainability: GSTC Training Equips Tourism Sector for a Greener Future

Malta’s commitment to sustainable tourism took center stage at the AX Palace in Sliema on October 1st and 2nd, 2024. The venue hosted a pivotal GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training, a testament to the ongoing partnership between the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). This collaboration, born from a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023, aims to elevate sustainability across Malta’s tourism sectors through the implementation of the GSTC Criteria.

The training was spearheaded by Dr. Ioannis Pappas, GSTC Director for the Mediterranean Region. Drawing on his extensive expertise, Dr. Pappas delivered insightful sessions that provided practical examples and industry insights. Participants were equipped with the necessary tools to implement sustainable practices within their tourism businesses and destinations.

Mr. Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, highlighted the event’s crucial role: “Sustainability is no longer an option but a necessity. We are proud to collaborate with the GSTC to bring this vital training to Malta, empowering our industry professionals to integrate sustainability into their operations. Through this partnership, Malta can lead the way in sustainable tourism across the Mediterranean.”

Dr. Ioannis Pappas, reflecting on the training, emphasized its significance: “It was a rewarding experience to engage with the dedicated hospitality professionals of Malta. The knowledge shared on the GSTC Criteria, coupled with global best practices, equips local hoteliers to lead the way in sustainability. By embracing these standards, they are not only preparing for certification but also contributing to a more responsible and sustainable future for tourism in Malta. I am confident that this training has laid a strong foundation for the next steps in their sustainability journey.”

The training session witnessed a dedicated group of 68 attendees deepening their understanding of the international sustainability standards. The event was further enriched by notable guest speakers including Thomas Loughlin, Program Manager for Sustainability at Booking.com, and Roza Tsirigoti, Social Responsibility Manager at the NJV Athens Plaza Hotel—the first in Greece to earn GSTC Certification. Maria Lougari, General Manager of the Castelli Hotel in Zante, shared valuable lessons from their journey towards GSTC Certification, providing practical insights into achieving sustainable tourism excellence.

This event marks a significant stride for Malta’s tourism industry, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices and setting a benchmark for other Mediterranean destinations. The training provides a solid foundation for Malta’s future, ensuring a thriving tourism sector that respects and preserves its natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.
