Man Arrested for Alleged Spying for China in German Parliament

A man who works for a German lawmaker in the European Parliament has been arrested on suspicion of spying for China, German prosecutors announced on Tuesday. The suspect, identified only as Jian G. in accordance with German privacy laws, was apprehended in Dresden on Monday.

The federal prosecutors did not reveal the identity of the lawmaker that Jian G. worked for, but Der Spiegel, a German magazine, reported that he was employed by Maximilian Krah of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, who is the party’s leading candidate in the upcoming European Parliament elections scheduled for early June.

The arrest occurred a day after three German citizens were apprehended in a separate incident on suspicion of spying for China and conspiring to transfer information on technology with possible military applications.
