Man Dies in Police Custody After Incident in Chilliwack, B.C.

A man has died in police custody after an incident in Chilliwack, B.C., on Friday afternoon.

The BC RCMP responded to reports of a fight inside a vehicle on Mary Street and Patten Avenue just after noon. Officers arrived and took a man into custody, but he subsequently went into medical distress and died.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has confirmed that it is investigating the incident, which it has classified as a fatality.

According to witness accounts, the man had kicked out the windshield of the vehicle from the inside and was resisting arrest when he was taken into custody. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man, but were unsuccessful.

The RCMP has stated that the incident was not a shooting and that there is no risk to public safety.
