Following a thorough investigation, the Peterborough County OPP arrested and charged a 39-year-old man, Corey Neil, of Hamilton Township, Ontario, with various offenses stemming from a fatal crash on Highway 115 south of Peterborough in early December 2023. Initially claiming to be a passenger, Neil was later determined to be the driver of the pickup truck involved in the collision with a commercial motor vehicle. The impact caused the truck to strike a guardrail and end up in the center of the highway, tragically resulting in the death of a 34-year-old woman. Neil was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. On Friday morning, the OPP announced the issuance of an arrest warrant for Neil based on evidence suggesting his initial claim of being a passenger was false. He was apprehended on May 15th while driving a vehicle in Peterborough. In a surprising turn of events, the passenger and Neil allegedly switched seats upon noticing the presence of police officers. Officers engaged with the individual in the passenger seat and confirmed his identity as the wanted suspect. Neil faces a litany of charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, operation of a motor vehicle causing death, operation while impaired (blood-drug concentration 80-plus), obstructing a police officer, two counts of driving while under suspension, and 10 counts of driving while prohibited. Additionally, he was charged with 10 counts of operation while prohibited, driving while under suspension, and obstructing a peace officer in connection with the May 15th incident. Neil was held in custody and scheduled to appear in court in Peterborough to face these charges.
