Manchester United’s new owners have decided against appointing Julian Nagelsmann as manager. They believe doing so would repeat past mistakes and undermine their plans for a ‘game model’ approach.
Nagelsmann, 36, is one of the most sought-after coaches globally. However, United feels his preferred style of play with wing-backs and a three-man defense would require significant changes to the current squad.
Instead, the club will focus on developing a coherent system that produces players for the first team and academy who share a similar footballing philosophy. Jason Wilcox, the newly appointed technical director, will be responsible for creating this ‘game model.’
Manchester United has been through multiple managers since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, often giving individual coaches excessive influence over transfer policy. Ten Hag, for example, has primarily signed players from the Netherlands.
United will now part ways with Erik ten Hag in the summer, marking the end of his disappointing tenure. The club believes the ‘game model’ approach will lay a strong foundation for long-term success and avoid the pitfalls of the past.
