Sections of the M56 motorway near Manchester Airport will undergo essential maintenance from June 10th to July 10th. Resurfacing work and other critical repairs will necessitate closures during these periods, primarily between 9 pm to 5 am on weekdays and until 7 am on weekends. On June 10th, resurfacing work will commence between junction five at the airport and junction six at Hale Barns. The eastbound carriageway will experience closures from junction six to junction four overnight on June 11th and 12th and again from July 8th to 10th, with local road diversions implemented. Furthermore, the eastbound stretch from junction seven to junction five will be closed from June 24th to 26th and on July 4th and 5th. A detailed list of closures is available on the National Highways website.
The M56 motorway closures follow recent nationwide airport delays caused by repeated Border Force e-gate outages. Despite these challenges, Manchester Airport continues to witness record-breaking traffic. In April 2024, the airport welcomed 2.41 million passengers, marking a 10.9% increase compared to April 2023 and exceeding the previous April record set in 2019 by 25,000 passengers. The top destinations for travelers during April included Dublin, Amsterdam, Dubai, Alicante, and Tenerife, with significant passenger volumes on these routes.
