According to X user Robbie Huang, the Chinese Puma website briefly showcased the new City shirt as available for sale before quickly changing the status to indicate its release on May 2. The image of the new kit remains on the website, fueling speculation that it is indeed the official design for next season. Unsurprisingly, the German manufacturer has opted for a light blue home shirt, a traditional color for the club.
The distinctive feature of the new kit lies in the ‘0161’ design on the sleeves and collar, a tribute to Manchester’s landline phone area code. This homage to the club’s home city is further emphasized by the presence of the ‘0161’ design on the inside of the shirt.
Puma and City have a history of incorporating historical references into their kit designs. This season’s home shirt commemorated the 20th anniversary of the club’s move to the Etihad Stadium, featuring architectural elements of the stadium and a design reminiscent of the first season at their new home. Last season’s shirt paid tribute to legendary City player Colin Bell, who led the club to their first league title in 1967. Coincidentally, Pep Guardiola’s team marked that season with the Blues’ first Champions League and treble success.
