Manchester Metrolink Breaks Record on Manchester Marathon Day

Greater Manchester’s Metrolink tram system notched a remarkable milestone on the day of the Manchester Marathon, setting a new personal best. The record-breaking day coincided with the 26.2-mile event that saw 32,000 runners take to the city streets, raising significant funds for various charitable causes.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) reported that the day marked Metrolink’s busiest Sunday in its 32-year history. An impressive 175,000 journeys were made, marking the highest passenger count ever recorded on a Sunday. Furthermore, it ranked as the eighth busiest day overall since Metrolink’s inception in April 1992.

For the second consecutive year, the record was shattered. A TfGM spokesperson stated that the milestone surpassed the previous high by 20%, which was also set during the 2022 Manchester Marathon.

The network experienced peak activity in the morning before the race commenced and in the early afternoon after its completion. The Altrincham, Bury, East Didsbury, and Manchester Airport lines were particularly busy.

TfGM provided comprehensive travel guidance to runners, spectators, and residents traveling into the city center, as numerous roads were closed, and bus services were diverted. Metrolink implemented robust plans to accommodate the increased demand.

Danny Vaughan, TfGM’s head of Metrolink, expressed his delight in Metrolink’s continued support for the marathon, which is a highlight of Greater Manchester’s events calendar. He emphasized the significance of the record-breaking day, showcasing the crucial role Metrolink plays in the region and for visitors alike.

Vaughan extended his gratitude to passengers, race organizers, and partners for their contributions to another successful event. He also commended the Metrolink staff for their dedication, particularly the individuals who assisted a runner who became unwell on a tram and ensured their safe return home.

Metrolink’s journey began on April 6, 1992, with a tram service between Manchester Victoria and Bury. Over the years, the network has undergone significant expansion, providing reliable and efficient transportation across Greater Manchester.
