Manchin Endorses Wheeling Mayor as Senate Replacement

Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has endorsed Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott (D) to replace him in the U.S. Senate. Manchin, who has served in the Senate since 2010, announced in November that he would not seek reelection to another term.

Manchin, in a statement posted by Elliott on his social media account, said he is proud to support Elliott’s candidacy because he has the determination, vigor, and vitality to be successful as a senator. Elliott, who is facing former coal company CEO Don Blankenship and Marine Corps veteran Zach Shrewsbury for the Democratic nomination, said he called Manchin shortly after the senator’s retirement announcement to discuss the possibility of running for the Senate.

Manchin’s endorsement is a significant boost to Elliott’s campaign. Manchin is one of the most moderate members of the Democratic Party serving in the Senate and has been reelected twice in a solidly red state. His endorsement suggests that Elliott may be a formidable candidate in the general election, even though Republicans are favored to win the seat.

The Senate race in West Virginia is one of the most closely watched races in the country. Republicans see it as a top pick-up opportunity, and Democrats are hoping to hold onto the seat. The primaries will be held on May 14.
