The Toronto Maple Leafs bounced back from their Game 1 loss to the Boston Bruins with a 3-2 victory in Game 2 on Monday night, thanks in large part to the performance of their star players.
David Pastrnak opened the scoring for the Bruins late in the first period, but the Leafs responded with goals from John Tavares and Auston Matthews to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Matthews scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the third period, taking a pass from Max Domi and beating Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark with a slick deke.
Matthews was a force all night for the Leafs, finishing with a goal, two assists, seven won faceoffs, and eight shots on net. He also played over 23 minutes and controlled 66.57 percent of expected goals at 5-on-5.
Tavares also had a strong game for the Leafs, scoring a power-play goal and winning 70 percent of his faceoffs.
The Bruins outshot the Leafs 58-27 at 5-on-5, but the Leafs were able to capitalize on their scoring chances and control the tempo of the game.
The Leafs now head home for Game 3 on Wednesday night with a 1-1 series record. They will be looking to continue their strong play and take a 2-1 series lead.
