Maratha Activist Urges Defeat of Opponents in Lok Sabha Polls

Maratha activist Manoj Jarange Patil has appealed to the Maratha community to use their voting power to defeat those who oppose Maratha reservation and ‘sage-soyare’ in the ongoing second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Patil, who arrived in an ambulance to cast his vote, emphasized the importance of unity and vigilance within the community.

Patil stated that the Maratha community has not decided to support or oppose any party or alliance. However, he urged Marathas to vote against those who have been against their interests, including those who oppose Maratha reservation and the inclusion of ‘sage-soyare’ in the OBC category. Patil noted that sometimes, delivering a defeat to such candidates can bring even greater satisfaction than simply winning an election.

He also indicated that Maratha organizations will likely consider fielding candidates in all 288 constituencies of Maharashtra in the next Assembly polls. Patil believes that the people are aware of who has supported the community and who has worked against them, and they will know how to vote accordingly.

Patil’s appeal comes against the backdrop of the state government’s passage of 10 percent Maratha reservation under the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Classes Act in a special session held in February 2024. However, this legislation is currently being challenged in the Bombay High Court.

Patil had previously demanded Kunbi certificates for eligible Marathas and their blood relations to help them avail of reservation under the OBC category, but the government has put this demand on hold, citing the need for further study. Disappointed with the government’s lack of progress on this issue, Patil has pledged to continue his protests after the Lok Sabha polls.

Patil has been extensively touring the state and holding public meetings to mobilize support for his cause. ‘Sage-soyare’ is a Marathi term that refers to relatives from the family tree, and Patil believes that their inclusion in the reservation category is essential for the community’s welfare.
