In a significant move to secure Scott Drew’s top assistant, BYU men’s basketball coach Mark Pope has appointed Alvin Brooks III to his staff, according to sources. Brooks has been an integral part of Baylor’s success since joining Drew in Waco in 2016. His contributions helped establish the Bears as one of the nation’s most consistent programs, culminating in their 2021 national championship victory and the acquisition of two top-five recruiting classes.
Brooks’ adeptness in recruiting is a major asset for Pope. As a Houston native, Brooks has deep ties in Texas, providing BYU with a strong recruiting presence in the region. Prior to joining Drew’s staff, he worked under Bruce Weber at Kansas State for four years. Brooks’ coaching experience also includes stints at Sam Houston State, Bradley, Midland College (JC), and Arkansas-Fort Smith (D-II). His father, Alvin Brooks II, is the head coach at Lamar.
Pope has now finalized his primary assistant coach positions. Brooks joins Cody Fueger, who Pope brought with him from BYU, and Jason Hart, who was the head coach of the G League Ignite since 2021 and previously one of USC’s top assistant coaches. Mark Fox, former head coach at Cal, Georgia, and Nevada, is expected to join the staff in a non-recruiting capacity.
