Mark Selby Considers Early Snooker Retirement due to Mental Block

Mark Selby’s World Snooker Championship first-round exit to Joe O’Connor has reignited his retirement thoughts.

The four-time world champion endured a disappointing performance, which he described as ‘pathetic,’ and admitted to struggling with a mental block that has plagued him throughout the season.

Selby’s frustration stems from his inability to replicate his practice form in matches. He believes he is playing as well as ever in practice sessions, but something switches once he enters tournament play. This mental hurdle has damaged his enjoyment of the sport and taken a toll on his well-being.

The 40-year-old expressed his desire to overcome the mental obstacle but acknowledged that retirement may be an option if he cannot find a solution. He plans to consult with his wife during the summer break to weigh his options.

Selby emphasized the importance of his happiness and that he is not willing to continue playing snooker if it becomes a chore. He will take time to reflect on his future and consider whether reducing his tournament schedule or pursuing other endeavors would be more beneficial.

Despite his early exit, Selby remains supportive of O’Connor, his friend, and practice partner. He was proud to see O’Connor perform well in his Crucible debut and wished him luck for the rest of the tournament.
