Celebrity chef Martha Stewart has dismissed comparisons between herself and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, as “irritating and insulting.” The comparisons arose after Meghan launched her lifestyle and cookery brand, American Riviera Orchard, in March 2023. The brand aims to be a lifestyle and cookery brand tied in with Meghan’s upcoming Netflix show. Trademark documents suggest that the brand may offer home decor items, marmalades, jams, and other lifestyle products, including dog shampoo and cosmetics. Some have suggested that Meghan could generate significant revenue in the first weeks of American Riviera Orchard’s launch, drawing comparisons to celebrities like Martha Stewart. However, Stewart has expressed her displeasure with the comparisons, claiming that she has “seen hundreds of Meghan types come and go” and that Meghan is a “rookie” compared to her decades of experience in building her brand. Stewart has also criticized other celebrities in the past, including Gwyneth Paltrow, who has also been likened to Meghan for her lifestyle ventures. In 2014, Stewart said of Paltrow, “She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart!” Meghan has also faced competition from her father-in-law, King Charles, who sells homemade and organic products from his Highgrove estate under the Highgrove brand. The brand was established in 1990 to promote organic farming and support sustainable agricultural practices. It has since grown into a popular range of organic food products that includes jams, biscuits, beverages, and dairy, among other items.
