Marvin T. Dubin, Buffalo Attorney and Community Leader, Dies at 86

Marvin T. Dubin, a respected attorney in Buffalo for over five decades, passed away on April 17, 2024, at the age of 86. Born in Buffalo to Ukrainian immigrants, Dubin attended Bennett High School and later graduated from the University of Buffalo and UB Law School.

Dubin’s legal career focused on commercial law. He was associated with the firm of Goldstein and Freed before co-founding Dubin and Sommerstein with his friend Robert Sommerstein in the 1970s. He served as counsel to Delaware North Companies for 45 years and mentored his son, Robert J., who joined the firm in 2008.

Beyond his legal work, Dubin was actively involved in the community. He co-chaired the lawyers committee in Dennis Gorski’s successful campaign for Erie County executive in 1987 and served as secretary of Gorski’s transition committee. Dubin was a member of the Montefiore Club and Temple Beth Tzedek, as well as the Young Men’s Division and board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo. He also served on the board of directors of the Western New York Chapter of the March of Dimes.

In addition to his legal and community involvements, Dubin published an autobiography, “Dubin’s Life, a Memoir,” in 2020. The book detailed his journey from humble beginnings to success and donated proceeds to the Hebrew Benevolent Loan Association, which had supported his family during his childhood.

Dubin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley A. Gandel; his daughter, Amy Rose Dubin; his sons, Robert J. and Jeffrey E.; and three grandchildren. He will be remembered as a dedicated attorney, community leader, and a respected member of the Buffalo community.
