Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has joined Olympique de Marseille on a five-year deal, the clubs announced on Thursday. The 22-year-old, who came through the ranks at United’s academy, will reportedly cost the Ligue 1 club up to €31.6 million.
Greenwood’s move to Marseille marks the end of a turbulent period for the young player. He made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United after making his debut in 2019. However, he spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain after United decided to distance themselves from him following allegations of assault and attempted rape, which Greenwood denied. All criminal charges against him were ultimately dropped.
During his time at Getafe, Greenwood scored 10 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions. Getafe finished 12th in LaLiga, and the club’s president, Angel Torres, expressed his desire to keep Greenwood for another season in May. LaLiga president Javier Tebas also voiced his hope for Greenwood to extend his stay in Spain.
Marseille, who appointed former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach last month, begin their Ligue 1 campaign on August 18th with a match against Brest.
