Massachusetts Considers Tolling at State Borders

Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt’s suggestion to impose tolls on drivers entering the state has ignited a heated debate. Tibbits-Nutt raised the possibility during a speech to the advocacy group Walk Massachusetts, citing financial challenges faced by her department.

The proposal has drawn criticism from neighboring states like New Hampshire, with Governor Chris Sununu using it to promote the benefits of moving to his state. Former Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte also condemned the idea, labeling it as representative of Massachusetts’ approach towards residents.

The opposition extends beyond conservatives. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee’s office has expressed opposition to the tolls, as has State Auditor Diana DiZoglio. DiZoglio highlighted the potential negative impact on border communities and the region as a whole, citing increased congestion and economic harm.

A task force charged with creating a sustainable transportation finance plan by the end of 2024 is considering various strategies, including tolling. However, any recommendations would require collaboration with the Legislature and stakeholders, with careful consideration of affordability and competitiveness implications.
