Massachusetts State Police engaged in a high-speed pursuit on Monday afternoon, chasing a vehicle through traffic on multiple interstates. The vehicle traveled on Interstate 495 northbound, then southbound, and ultimately Interstate 290 westbound. As the pursuit continued, the vehicle reportedly lost a tire and sustained damage to its rear bumper. Its erratic maneuvers included briefly entering a ramp in the wrong direction while attempting to re-enter I-495 northbound from the southbound side. During its transition to I-290 from I-495, the vehicle struck several cars. The pursuit culminated in Northborough on I-290, where the vehicle lost control, skidded off the road, and crashed into a median. It came to a stop amidst the trees in the median. Troopers swiftly apprehended at least two individuals from the vehicle while brandishing their weapons. Former Boston Police Commissioner William Evans provided commentary during WCVB’s coverage of the incident, highlighting the complexities of pursuit policies, which are influenced by the severity of the underlying offense and the potential risks involved. Evans emphasized that decisions regarding pursuits should balance the seriousness of the crime with the safety of the public.
