Massachusetts Receives $156 Million for Solar Programs for Low-Income Communities

The federal Environmental Protection Agency announced a $156 million grant to the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources for solar initiatives focusing on underserved communities. The funding will fund solar projects and initiatives such as interest-free loans, leases, and affordable housing financing. Massachusetts’ Solar for All program targets 125 megawatts of solar capacity, reducing energy bills by 20% for over 31,000 low-income homes. The program anticipates creating 2,800 clean energy jobs and cutting annual carbon emissions by 70,500 tons. Governor Maura Healey praised the award, highlighting the state’s commitment to clean energy and environmental justice. The grant supports the federal government’s broader Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and the Inflation Reduction Act’s focus on state climate action. The state expects an additional $286 million in private investment.
