Massive Landslide in Papua New Guinea Claims Lives of Over 670 People

The catastrophic landslide in Papua New Guinea’s Kaokalam Village has left a trail of destruction and claimed the lives of hundreds. The UN migration agency estimates that over 670 people have perished, with the death toll likely to rise as rescue efforts continue. The landslide, which struck in the early hours of Sunday, decimated homes, burying people as they slept. As per the UN agency, over 150 houses have been engulfed, leaving an estimated 1,250 people displaced and over 250 nearby homes abandoned. The impact zone was densely populated, with approximately 4,000 people residing there, including those displaced by nearby conflicts.

The landslide has created a vast debris field spanning 200 square kilometers, blocking roads and posing significant challenges for rescue and aid operations. Aid organizations, including CARE Australia, have begun distributing essential supplies such as water, hygiene kits, food, and shelter to those affected. However, ongoing landslides, falling rocks, and ground movement are posing serious risks to everyone in the area.

The remoteness of the affected region, coupled with the rugged terrain, is hindering rescue efforts and hampering the delivery of aid. The situation is particularly dire as the displaced population seeks refuge with relatives and friends, putting a strain on limited resources. The landslide has severely impacted the infrastructure, including a section of the highway near the Porgera gold mine, further complicating relief efforts.

As the search for survivors and recovery efforts continue, the need for urgent assistance remains paramount. Aid organizations and authorities are working diligently to provide support and aid to the affected communities. The full extent of the devastation and the number of lives lost are still being determined, but the tragedy has left an indelible mark on Papua New Guinea.
