Blush, when applied correctly, can illuminate your entire face, giving you that coveted rosy, post-workout glow. But when done incorrectly, it can quickly turn into a clownish mishap. To ensure you’re getting it right and avoiding any cheeky mishaps, we consulted expert makeup artist Puneet B Saini, who regularly works her magic on stars like Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma. She shares the most common blush mistakes and tips on how to master the art of a perfectly flushed complexion.
1. You’re Being Heavy-Handed
It’s easy to go overboard with blush, but the key is to start with a small amount and build up color gradually. If you’ve already applied too much pigment, gently blot it to soften the look and disperse the color with a damp makeup sponge. Remember, less is more, especially when it comes to shimmery blushes and highlighters. A light touch is all you need.
2. You’re Not Using the Right Tools
Those tiny mini brushes that come with your palette? They’re not going to cut it. For a smooth application, look for soft, dome-shaped bristles (they ripple when you blow on them) instead of a stiff and tapered brush. This helps direct the product to the right area.
If you’re using a cream formula, your fingers, a sponge, or a fluffy brush can work wonders. Just make sure your hands are clean and start by dabbing the product on the apples of your cheeks, working it upwards towards your temples and blending a tiny amount on your nose.
When it comes to powder blush, the brush you choose depends on your desired outcome. A simple, flushed look requires a brush that picks up less product, like a fluffy brush that glides on effortlessly. For a more concentrated blush in a specific area, opt for a coarser, tighter brush to swirl on the product.
3. You’re Using the Wrong Shade
Don’t blindly follow trends when choosing your blush shade. Testing colors on yourself is crucial. If you have a warmer skin tone, opt for burnt orange and taupe shades with a hint of yellow pigment. Too light a shade can make you look grey. Cooler and lighter skin tones, on the other hand, benefit from pinker shades that brighten the complexion. Remember, the warmer your skin tone, the deeper the colors you can use—purples, dark reds, corals, and rich browns are all excellent options.
4. The Texture Isn’t Working for You
One of the most common blush mistakes is not selecting the right formula for your skin type. This is essential for achieving desired coverage and preventing smudging, pilling, or fading throughout the day.
If you’re aiming for a healthy glow, powder blush is the way to go, especially if you have oily skin or plan to be outdoors. It works best in humid and warmer climates and offers non-shiny coverage over matte foundation.
Cream blush is lighter and works as a one-step makeup product for dry skin. Simply dab it on and let it sit on your skin. Its light sheen can also double as a highlighter.
Liquid formulas offer long-lasting color, while gel textures blend beautifully in humid or wet weather.
5. You’re Not Swirling It On Right
Apply blush with a tapping motion instead of streaking it across your face. This creates even coverage by providing multiple points of contact with your skin. Remember, like products should be applied with like. Powder blush won’t work over a liquid foundation; it may emulsify on your skin throughout the day. If you’ve chosen powder blush, use a matte foundation and setting powder to set it, preventing it from settling into any oily patches.
