Veteran German defender Mats Hummels has found a new home in Serie A. AS Roma announced on Wednesday that they have signed the 35-year-old to a one-year contract. Hummels, a World Cup winner with Germany in 2014, was available on a free transfer after his contract with Borussia Dortmund ended in July.
While financial details of the deal were not disclosed, Italian media reports suggest Hummels will earn €2.5 million ($2.8 million) over the duration of his contract. He joins a Roma side looking to improve upon their sixth-place finish in Serie A last season.
Hummels boasts an impressive resume, having won two Bundesliga titles and two German Cups with Dortmund. He also enjoyed a successful stint with Bayern Munich, where he lifted eight trophies, including another Bundesliga title and a Champions League crown.
His arrival at Roma marks a new chapter in his career and will add valuable experience to the Giallorossi’s backline. Hummels will wear the number 15 shirt and will be the seventh German player to represent the club. This move is expected to bolster Roma’s defensive capabilities as they aim for a strong showing in the upcoming season.
