MBTA Announces Major Spring Construction Impacting Red, Orange, Green, and Commuter Rail Lines

The MBTA has announced significant construction work planned for May 2023, affecting multiple rail lines across the system. These upgrades are intended to enhance the overall reliability of the network. The planned construction will impact the Red, Orange, Green, and commuter rail lines.

Red Line

Red Line service will be suspended between Park Street and JFK/UMass from Wednesday, May 1st, through Thursday, May 9th. During this period, evening Red Line trains will not operate after 8:30 p.m. between Park Street and Ashmont. Additionally, during the weekends of May 11th-12th and 18th-19th, Red Line service will be modified. Service will be suspended between Broadway and Braintree, partially due to work related to the Dorchester Avenue Bridge replacement project. Free shuttle buses will replace service between suspended stations during these changes.

Green Line

On Saturday, May 4th, Green Line service will bypass Magoun Square on the Medford/Tufts branch for the entire day. Passengers are advised to utilize the 80 or 88 bus routes instead, which operate between Magoun Square and Lechmere.

Orange Line

Orange Line service will be suspended between Wellington and North Station starting around 8:45 p.m. on Friday, May 17th, continuing through the weekend (May 18th-19th). On Monday, May 20th, service will be suspended again from 8:45 p.m. through Friday, May 24th. Shuttle buses will replace service between Wellington and North Station during these closures. From May 28th to June 6th, service will be suspended between Wellington and Back Bay all day, every day. Shuttle buses will operate between Wellington and North Station only, after which passengers can use parallel Green Line service from North Station to Copley.

Commuter Rail

Multiple commuter rail lines will also be affected by the spring construction. The Kingston, Middleborough, and Greenbush lines will not operate between South Station and Braintree on the weekends of May 11th-12th and 18th-19th. From Saturday, April 27th, to Sunday, May 5th, service will be suspended on the Middleborough/Lakeville line between Middleborough/Lakeville and Bridgewater. The Fairmount line service will be suspended between Readville and South Station during the weekend of May 4th-5th. During the weekend of May 18th-19th, service will be suspended between North Station and Swampscott on the Newburyport/Rockport line and between Ballardvale and North Station on the Haverhill line. Shuttle bus service will be available for all suspended stations on all commuter rail lines.
