Mecha Break, unveiled at last year’s Game Awards, defies easy categorization. It combines the intensity of hero shooters like Overwatch with the mech combat of Armored Core.
While mechs can be customized, the emphasis is not on granular part selection as in Armored Core or MechWarrior. Instead, Mecha Break introduces distinct heroic archetypes like ‘chivalric knights’ and ‘shinobis’. The developers prioritize mech balance, dedicating significant time to testing and adjustments. They aim for ‘asymmetric’ balance, ensuring each mech has a specific tactical role and synergizes with others.
Inspiration from the Gundam franchise is evident in Mecha Break’s design and gameplay. It retains a faster pace than the slower Armored Core 5 and MechWarrior series, but falls short of the blazing speed of Armored Core 4.
One standout feature is the PvEvP mode, reminiscent of battle royale games but with unique twists. Up to 60 players compete on a vast map, encountering NPC interactions and boss fights. However, it offers a novel extraction mechanic, allowing players to leave the match early via designated escape points, providing a less competitive option.
Mecha Break’s hybrid gameplay, blending mechs, hero shooter mechanics, and battle royale elements, makes it a compelling offering. With a closed beta scheduled for April 26-29, players eager to experience this innovative fusion can sign up for a chance to participate.
