Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently on a visit to Colombia, arriving on August 15th (local time). Their trip was initiated by an invitation from Vice President Francia Márquez, the first Black woman to hold the position in Colombia. Márquez revealed that her motivation to invite the couple stemmed from their Netflix documentary series ‘Harry & Meghan’.
“How did I get to know Meghan and Harry? I first learned about them through the media, especially the Netflix series that showcased their lives and story. I was deeply moved by it,” Márquez shared during a press conference. The documentary, which debuted in December 2020, chronicles Harry and Meghan’s lives, from their childhoods to their relationship, marriage, and eventual departure from the royal family. It gained significant attention, setting a record for the most-watched documentary on Netflix in its premiere week.
Márquez, a human rights activist, lawyer, and Minister of Equality in Colombia, expressed her desire to bring Meghan’s story to her country: “It motivated me to invite this woman to our nation and share her story. Her visit will undoubtedly empower many women around the world.” She also revealed that she had previously invited Meghan to Colombia for the International Day of the Black Woman of Latin America and the Caribbean on July 25th, but the invitation was unable to materialize.
The couple’s schedule includes a stay in Bogotá on August 16th, where they will engage in discussions with students about the significance of emotional well-being in education. They will also participate in a luncheon hosted by Vice President Márquez and meet with Colombia’s Invictus Games participants. During their Colombian visit, they are also expected to travel to Cartagena and Cali, the country’s third-largest city.
