Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has announced an investment in CESTA COLLECTIVE, a brand dedicated to showcasing handcrafted handbags created by Rwandan women. This marks another strategic move by Markle, known for her conscious fashion choices and commitment to supporting emerging brands. CESTA COLLECTIVE first caught Markle’s attention in May 2022 when she was seen carrying one of their white shoulder bags during a meal with Prince Harry, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cameron Diaz.
Markle’s awareness of her influence as a global figure grew in 2017 when she became engaged to Prince Harry. During a public engagement, she wore a handbag from Scottish brand STRATHBERRY, which promptly sold out online within 11 minutes. Witnessing the impact of her fashion choices on the brand’s success led her to re-evaluate her approach to dressing.
“My perspective on dressing changed,” she shared in an interview with The New York Times. “I’m aware of the global spotlight on me, and I know what I wear, and what I don’t wear, is scrutinized. I choose to support small, new, and deserving brands.”
Meghan’s belief in the power of fashion as a tool for empowerment is evident in her investments. She first ventured into the world of venture capital in 2020 with an investment in Clevr Blends, a vegan latte brand. Since then, she has continued to invest in a select few companies. While the specific terms of her investment in CESTA COLLECTIVE remain undisclosed, Courtney Weinblatt-Fashano, co-founder of the brand, confirmed that Markle has acquired a minority stake.
“Investing in them was a period of preparation, a stepping stone towards investing in myself,” Markle explained in a recent statement regarding her investment in American Riviera Orchard, her own lifestyle brand.
Markle’s consistent support of ethical and emerging brands highlights her desire to use her platform to amplify voices often overlooked and foster positive change within the fashion industry. This investment in CESTA COLLECTIVE further solidifies her commitment to promoting sustainable practices and empowering women entrepreneurs.
