Opposition to Memorial Drive Extension Grows in Abbeydale
Lorraine Koop, an Abbeydale resident of 33 years, has seen her backyard and surrounding area transformed over time. Once a peaceful haven with the sounds of wildlife, the neighborhood has become increasingly noisy due to the proximity of Stoney Trail. Koop and many of her neighbors are now vehemently opposed to the proposed extension of Memorial Drive, which would add four more lanes directly behind her property.
The city’s long-standing plan to extend Memorial Drive aims to provide access to the growing suburb of Belvedere, projected to accommodate 60,000 residents and generate 10,000-15,000 jobs. However, concerns have been raised about the loss of green space that the project would entail.
Some residents, like Kevin Warner, welcome the change, citing the lack of maintenance and use of the existing park. However, others, such as Daniel Rojas, question the necessity of expanding the green space and argue that the area is rarely frequented.
Councillor Andre Chabot emphasizes the benefits of improved access to existing parks and the plans to expand them and plant trees along the boulevard. The city intends to incorporate feedback from Wednesday’s open house and online engagement into the recommended plan, which will be finalized this summer.
