The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen has finally unveiled its electric version, officially named the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. While many expected it to join the EQ family as the EQG, Mercedes has opted to retain the traditional G-Class moniker. This electric SUV boasts an impressive powertrain with four electric motors delivering 432kW and 1164Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 180km/h.
The G 580 features a 116kWh battery pack that provides a range of 473km on the WLTP cycle. Despite its electric nature, it maintains exceptional off-road capabilities with a reduction gear for low-range driving, virtual differential locks, and the ability to drive up 45-degree grades. The G 580 also offers unique features like G-Turn for spinning on its axis and G-Steering for reduced turning circles.
Inside, the G 580 offers a luxurious cabin with open pore natural walnut interior, nappa leather steering wheel, and dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Standard safety features include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera, and traffic sign recognition.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has yet to confirm the local availability and pricing of the G 580. In Europe, prices start from €142,621.50, which is equivalent to over $235,000. The G63 AMG, the lone G-Class on sale in Australia, is priced from $363,561 before on-road costs.
