Mercedes-Benz Unveils All-Electric G-Wagen: Luxury Off-Roading Goes Green

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled their much-anticipated all-electric G-Wagen, dubbed the EQG, signaling a significant step towards electrification for the iconic luxury off-roader. The EQG boasts impressive specifications, including a 116 kWh battery, four electric motors with a combined output of 580 horsepower, and a maximum torque of 1,164 Newton-meters. This allows for a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h.

The EQG offers an estimated range of 293 miles (473 km) on the WLTP standard, providing ample range for both on- and off-road adventures. It comes equipped with advanced off-roading features such as a tank turn, which enables sharper, on-axis rotations, and a three-speed intelligent crawl function that maintains optimal speed while traversing uneven surfaces.

Despite its electric nature, the EQG remains faithful to its rugged heritage. It is built on a ladder frame concept and features a unique underbody skid plate made from an intelligent material mix that includes carbon, providing enhanced rigidity, corrosion protection, and weight savings. The skid plate, which measures 26 millimeters thick and weighs 57.6 kilograms, is attached to the ladder frame with over 50 steel screws.

The exterior of the EQG is largely similar to the current gas-fueled G-Wagen, with subtle design changes such as illuminated grille accents, a slightly raised bonnet, and air curtains in the rear wheel wells for improved aerodynamics. The interior remains familiar, retaining the iconic passenger grab bar and surrounding it with carbon fiber. Physical buttons abound, and the air vents are delightfully tactile and circular. The pedals feature raised rivets for enhanced grip during off-roading, and the 12.3-inch digital display runs on Mercedes’ well-received MBUX infotainment system. Rear-seat passengers can enjoy a variety of media on their personal 11.6-inch touchscreens mounted on the back of the front seats.

The EQG is a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to electrification without compromising the G-Class’s legendary capabilities. It offers a compelling blend of luxury, off-road prowess, and environmental consciousness.
