Argentina, the reigning Copa America champions and fresh off their World Cup victory, kick off their title defense against tournament debutants Canada on Thursday in Atlanta. Led by the legendary Lionel Messi, the Argentines are aiming for another strong performance in the 48th edition of the tournament, hosted for the second time by the United States.
Argentina, a formidable force with 34 top-three finishes and 128 match victories in Copa America history, boasts a formidable roster featuring 21 players from their World Cup-winning squad. Messi, tied for seventh in the tournament’s all-time scoring list with 13 goals, also holds the record for assists with 17. On Thursday, he will make his 35th Copa America appearance, surpassing the record previously held by Chile’s Sergio Livingstone.
Despite their recent successes, Messi insists that Argentina will not take anything for granted. “Today, we can say that we are the best because we are the world champions. But that does not make us believe that we are going to win this Copa America by walking,” he said.
Argentina, ranked number one in the FIFA world rankings, faces a youthful Canadian side ranked 49th. Under new coach Jesse Marsch, Canada is using the tournament as preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with the United States and Mexico. Their Copa America squad features only two players over 30, with 15 aged 25 or younger.
“I think it’s been good for this new group. It’s kind of a new era and guys are responding really well,” said Canadian midfielder Jonathan Osorio.
The clash between the experienced Argentines and the youthful Canadians will be an interesting matchup. Messi, who turns 37 on Monday, continues to showcase his incredible talent, with 12 goals in 12 matches for Inter Miami in the MLS this season.
Canada’s next match is against Peru on Tuesday, the same day Argentina faces Chile. Both teams will wrap up their group games on June 29, with Canada taking on Chile and Argentina playing Peru.
