Kristen McDonald Privet, a state senator, has been declared the winner of the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. This victory positions her to succeed Rep. Dan Kildee, who has announced he will not be seeking re-election after representing the district since 2012.
Privet’s path to the nomination involved a three-way race against Matt Collier, the former mayor of Flint, Michigan, and Pamela Pugh, who currently serves as president of the Michigan State Board of Education.
Privet’s experience extends beyond her current role as state senator. She has also served as executive director of Michigan Head Start, chief of staff for Michigan’s Department of Education, and vice president of the Skillman Foundation. She stands out as the first female state senator to represent the Great Lakes Bay Region.
The primary election in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District was one of several key races across four states on Tuesday, shaping the landscape for the November Senate and House elections.
