First-year Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith has secured the first commitment of the 2025 recruiting cycle with the addition of three-star quarterback Leo Hannan. Hannan, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound signal-caller from Servite High School in Anaheim, California, announced his commitment to the Spartans on Monday night via social media.
Smith, a fellow Southern California native, and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren had offered Hannan a scholarship when they were at Oregon State and continued to recruit him after arriving in East Lansing.
Hannan, ranked as the No. 50 quarterback and No. 813 overall recruit in the 2025 class, had received offers from several schools, including Washington, Arkansas, Colorado, and Minnesota.
Smith, who took over the Spartans in November, had less than a month to salvage his first recruiting class before the early signing period. He made a significant addition by bringing quarterback Aidan Chiles, a former four-star recruit who played as a true freshman last year at Oregon State, to Michigan State.
Following a hectic 2024 recruiting cycle, Smith and his staff have been more selective in the 2025 class. Prior to Hannan’s commitment, Michigan State was the only team in the Big Ten without a 2025 commit, with Ohio State leading the way with 13 and four schools tied for the second-lowest total with one.
Hannan joins a quarterback room that has undergone a significant makeover. In addition to Chiles, the Spartans have added North Dakota graduate transfer Tommy Schuster and three-star 2024 signees Alessio Milivojevic and Ryland Jessee.
