Microsoft Enters Custom AI Chip Race with Maia 100

Microsoft has officially entered the competitive custom AI hardware market, challenging NVIDIA’s stronghold with its first AI accelerator, Maia 100. Unveiled at the Hot Chips conference, Maia 100 is built on TSMC’s advanced 5nm process node and is designed to deliver a potent blend of performance and efficiency, a crucial factor in the world of cloud-based AI workloads.

The chip’s architecture boasts custom server boards, racks, and software specifically tailored for running AI services like Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Services. The Maia 100 chip itself is compact, measuring approximately 820mm2, and utilizes TSMC’s N5 process technology with COWOS-S interposer technology. Its impressive 64GB of HBM2E memory, coupled with four HBM2E die, provides a staggering 1.8 terabytes per second of bandwidth and 64 gigabytes of capacity to handle the massive data demands of AI operations.

Maia 100’s architecture is designed for both training and inference, featuring a high-speed 16xRx16 tensor unit and a versatile vector processor supporting a wide range of data types, including FP32 and BF16. While the 64GB of HBM2E memory might seem less than the 80GB found in NVIDIA’s H100 chip, and significantly less than the upcoming 192GB HBM3E in the B200, Microsoft emphasizes that Maia 100 prioritizes cost-effectiveness and efficiency in its AI processing capabilities.

On the software front, Maia 100 comes equipped with the Maia SDK, enabling developers to easily port existing models created in Pytorch and Triton.
