Windows 11 has become known for its integration of advertisements, or what Microsoft calls ‘recommendations,’ throughout its user interface. While some users have found these ads intrusive, Microsoft’s latest move in the ad front is a welcome change. The company is making it simpler for users to manage these ‘recommendations’ through a more prominent and clearer setting in the Windows 11 Settings app.
Recent test builds of Windows 11 in the Canary and Beta channels have introduced a dedicated ‘Recommendation & Offers’ page in the Privacy & security settings. This page replaces the previous ‘General’ options page and includes a new ‘Personalized offers’ toggle. This toggle, which previously existed as a differently worded option hidden in the ‘Diagnostic data’ page, clearly states its purpose: to enable personalized ads, tips, and recommendations based on your Windows activity.
Microsoft has also updated the descriptions of all toggles within the ‘Recommendation & Offers’ panel, making them more precise and understandable. This effort reflects a genuine attempt by Microsoft to enhance user control over their ad experience. While this change may seem small, it is a significant step towards providing greater transparency and clarity regarding ad settings. With the dedicated ‘Recommendation & Offers’ page, users can now more easily locate the options to disable ads, tips, and recommendations, ensuring they have a more personalized and less intrusive Windows 11 experience.
Although the wording of the ‘Personalized offers’ toggle has changed slightly, the functionality remains the same. The option to turn off ads and recommendations, previously described as ‘using your diagnostic data,’ now uses ‘your Windows activity,’ which, while seemingly ominous, is likely just a change for clarity and consistency.
Microsoft’s attempts to integrate ads into Windows 11 have not been without controversy, with some users criticizing the increased presence of advertisements. These efforts include the introduction of ads in the Settings app itself, promoting the Game Pass subscription, and potential ad placements in the Microsoft Store. While these initiatives remain under development, Microsoft’s recent changes in the ‘Recommendation & Offers’ page demonstrate a commitment to user control and transparency, which is a positive sign for Windows 11 users.
